Roosevelt College Cainta evolved from then Mayor Wenceslao C. dela Paz’ obsession to let the young people of Marikina go beyond grade school and learn something more than shoemaking and farming, and established the Marikina Academy in 1933; to the desire of a group of prominent Marikeñan citizens and educators headed by Eng’r. Deogracias F. dela Paz to answer the call of postwar reconstruction and rehabilitation after World War II thus establishing a corporation in 1945 at Barangay San Roque to operate as Secondary School, the Roosevelt Memorial High School, named in honor of the late wartime US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt; to the transfer of the campus site after the termination of the lease in San Roque to the 1.5 hectare parcel of land in Sumulong Highway, Cainta, Rizal in 1974. Initially, this was called Marikina School. The transfer of the entire RMHS San Roque to this site in 1976 necessitated the change of name to Roosevelt College Cainta.
The steady influx of student population caused for long-term development. The most significant development in the 80’s focused on management system and processes and in academic contests and delivery system. Massive reforms were effected in planning system, organization set-up, staffing patterns and practices, financial control and unit level management procedures. A 5-year academic development program was launched in 1980. The program aimed to improve academic standard of the school by improving the general internal environment systems, upgraded qualification of people element, improvement of school facilities and instructional materials and adoption of more discriminating student acceptance policy. In 1988, as if to test the effects of the program, initial steps were taken toward accreditation with the PAASCU, and the school universal standard which raises the passing score from the usual 50% to 65% and later 70%, was put into effect, with the assumption that if needed instructional systems have improved then students are ready for higher level of performance expectations.
As an added measure to make educational offering more relevant the high school and elementary curricula were made quantitative in the 1990’s. Pupils from Grades 2 to 6 were given Basic Computer Skills lessons. Computer literacy was integrated in THE 1 and 2 while Educational computing was offered as a specialized course in THE 3 and 4. Likewise, Computer-Aided-Instructions in English, Science, Mathematics were introduced. Advanced Computer courses and Internet were also offered as enrichment subject for high school students while Trigonometry and Calculus were made part of the Curriculum.
Research was integrated in English and Filipino in the 3rd and 4th year levels and was made a requirement for graduation.
Massive infrastructure and facilities development program was also undertaken including modernization of Science laboratories, upgrade of computer laboratories, language laboratory and a gymnasium.
To underscore its commitment to provide quality education, the school opted to implement the 2002 RBEC during the School Year 2002-2003 to test its effectiveness. Whatever insights gained from the year long experiment were inputed in developing a distinctly Roosevelt Basic Education curriculum. Towards this end, the school sought permission from DepEd to modify the BEC for School Year 2004-2005 to better reflect the school’s goals.
In addition to the subjects required in the BEC, Roosevelt College enriched the curriculum by adding four (4) subjects: Speech and Grammar, Journalism, Trigonometry and Calculus. SY 2005-2006 saw the addition of Environmental Science as another additional subject, even as the Science subjects have integrated investigatory projects in the syllabi.
True to its commitment of providing academic excellence through the years, and as the entire Roosevelt College System celebrated its Diamond Jubilee, Roosevelt College continually strengthened its curriculum – the Roosevelt College Secondary Education Curriculum. It featured integrated and collaborative teaching approaches which may be linked and organized thematically, so students can perceive the connections among subjects or disciplines. It also featured class programs where each subject is taught in longer blocks of time. Whereas before, Speech and Grammar, Journalism, Trigonometry and Calculus and Environmental Science were taken as additional subjects, this time, they have been made as the focal features of and integrated in their respective umbrella subjects. The Third Year and Fourth Year Science Curricula have been restructured in such a way that Chemistry and Physics are taken simultaneously as separate subjects in the Third Year, and semestrally taken in the Fourth Year. This has been designed to equip students with skills and knowledge to get admitted to highly accredited colleges/universities.
School Years 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 had as the School Theme “Continuing Commitment to Provide Quality, Relevant and Responsive Education.” True enough, Roosevelt College is continuously committed to improve its Basic Education Curriculum. The following were offered as separate subjects-Edukasyon sa Pagpapahalaga, Elementary Algebra as Math I and Intermediate Algebra as Math II B. This is to provide each subject more time for value processing and internalization as well as more time for analytical and computational skills development, respectively.
The School believes that it can provide Quality Education if the curriculum it offers is Dynamic, Evolving, Relevant and Responsive to the needs of the community and to the changes of time. Hence, for School Year 2010-2011, a review of the Secondary Education Basic Education Curriculum has again been made, interchanging the Course Code of Intermediate Algebra (Math II A) and Geometry (Math II B); both still offered in the Second Year Level.
In line with the DepEd and FAPE requirements, the SED-BE Curriculum now features integrated and collaborative teaching approaches under the Understanding by Design (UbD) framework.
In support with the DepEd’s thrust to strengthen the Basic Education of the youth, Roosevelt College System in general and Roosevelt College Cainta in particular now prepares for a drastic shift in the curricular offerings, giving the youth opportunities to discover their inherent talents and develop their skills through the implementation of the foundation years of the K to 12.
ROOSEVELT COLLEGE CAINTA
Elementary Education Department
Roosevelt College Cainta, Elementary Education Department was started upon the initiative of Mrs. Felisa M. Dela Paz in 1964, in response to the persistent request from families of shoemakers who desired access to better education during the foundation years of their children.
The school which was formerly located at San Roque, markina, Metro Manila started with 35 preschool pupils with ages ranging from five to six and coming from home within the vicinity. The pioneering spirit of its founders was matched by the industry, persistence and creativity of its Principal, Mrs. Emma I. Santos.
In 1975, the Elementary School was transferred to its new site in Sumulong Highway, Cainta, Rizal initially the institution was named Marikina School with Mr.Irineo M. Cruz as Director. It was a lone building surrounded by tall grass and swampy field. Added to the inconvenience of both pupils and teachers was the problem of transport facilities that made the population of the school quite small during the first few years but which steadily increased in the coming years. There was no doubt that the school’s symbol of dedicated service and instructional competence found support from a clientele that included not only Mankenmans but also residents of neighboring town like Cainta, Antipolo and Pasig.
In 1995, the pre-school program was expanded to include developmental Kindergarten Curricular innovations like Technology Intensified Instruction (TII) were implemented in Grade 1 and the use of Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) in Science, English and Mathematics.
Educational Computing classes were offered from Grade 2 to Grade 6. Likewise, the use of the Language Laboratory and Recording Studio was made available to all pupils Grades 1 to 6.
At present, Mrs.Crisanta S. Motos serves as the Principal of the Elementary Education Department while Miss Aureeh Faith C. Dela Cruz is the Elementary Guidance Counselor.
With the Administration’s commitment to further enhance the personality of the school not only in academic but also through improved facilities, the Elementary Education Department pushes forward to greater heights of dedicated service for the upliftment of life and for the glory of God.
